First World War Centenary - GCHQ takes part in 'Lights Out'
We left a single light on in one section of our Cheltenham headquarters on 4 August 2014, joining the rest of the country in a shared moment of reflection.
"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime"
On 3rd August 1914, Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered these words on the eve of Britain entering the First World War.
Exactly 100 years later on 4th August 2014, from 10pm to 11pm, GCHQ joined the rest of the country by turning off its lights in one complete section of its Cheltenham Headquarters, leaving on a single light in a shared moment of reflection.
GCHQ's 24 hour mission in silent defence of our nation, was highlighted by maintaining lighting in the remainder of the building.
We will remember them.
