Our REACH network have created resource packs for schools and youth groups
For Black History Month, REACH, GCHQ’s Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage staff network have created resource packs for schools and youth groups. Suitable for ages 7-10 and 11+, the resources will facilitate educators and parents in light hearted activities for children; aimed at helping them to think about things from different cultural perspectives. You can download the resource packs at the bottom of this page.
The activities are designed to introduce or start conversations on our differences in an inquisitive and fun way where teachers or youth leaders have the ability to take activities further if they wish.
We encourage you to share this resource to help raise awareness, break stereotypes or barriers and most of all to have fun while partaking in the activities.
Black History Month is celebrated during the month of October in the UK but also observed by Ireland, Canada, US and the Netherlands at different times on the calendar. Originally it was the brainchild of American, Carter G Woodson, in the 1920’s who recognised a huge gap in the American education system when it came to African-American history.
Since then it has grown to incorporate the celebration of key achievements and history from the wider Black African diaspora. Its intention is to provide positive narratives which help highlight and promote black contributions, to serve as an encouragement against stereo types and to bring people and communities together as often the achievements are for the greater good of all society.
