Gloucestershire schools wow judges at Young Entrepreneurs Final 2019
We were delighted to welcome local schools to GCHQ for the Young Entrepreneurs Final on 10 May
Young Entrepreneurs 2019 winners, Westonbirt School
The competition, which is facilitated by GFirst LEP, is now in its eighth year, and six thousand students in Gloucestershire have been through the programme. The Year 9 students from ten local secondary schools had all taken part in inter-schools competitions during the year, with the winning team from each school making it to the final.
As 2019 is our Centenary Year, the theme for the competition was 'Technology over the next 100 years' and the schools needed to come up with an innovative idea in one of the following areas; ways to communicate; education technology; looking after our planet, or home technology. The students had to devise a new product or service and pitch their ideas to a panel of five judges, quite a daunting experience.
The judges were amazed at the vast range of ideas and the ingenuity of the students. All the teams were focused and delivered their presentations to a room packed full of GCHQ and GFirst LEP staff as well as local business mentors - which is no mean feat when you are only 13 and 14 years of age!
The judges had a very hard decision to make and needed extra time to deliberate, as all the entries were superb.
The results from Young Entrepreneurs Final 2019 were:
1st Place Westonbirt School with MiFridge iFRIDGE - a unique, personal fridge which takes into consideration various disabilities, food allergens and specific dietary requirements.
2nd Place Winchcombe School with The G-Nome - a domestic home security system.
3rd Place Archway School with Pollution Pods - a device to capture greenhouse gases.
Well done to everyone who took part – you were all brilliant!
