As set out in the Intelligence Services Act 1994, GCHQ has played an enduring role in protecting the national security of the country and our values. The world is now a more fragmented, volatile and contested place with states individually, or together, seeking to undermine the peaceful and stable international order.
We support the foreign and defence goals of the UK government by tackling the threats to us and our allies from hostile states, promoting the UK's prosperity and supporting open international order, international law and the fundamental principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter.
In recent years GCHQ has been involved in responding to the release of the online WannaCry attack by North Korean cyber actors, Russia's use of a nerve agent in Salisbury and Amesbury, and a number of other attempts to disrupt our own and our allies' way of life.
