Flexible working: a variety of options are available, including part-time, compressed hours and job share, which are all dependent on the role and business need.
TOIL and flexitime: if you work more than your hours, we believe you should be rewarded for it.
Flexible working is a catch-all term to describe a range of work arrangements which allow employees to adjust their working hours or patterns. Flexible working needs at GCHQ vary role by role. While many of our roles require full-time presence on-site, some positions may offer working from home options.
Any flexible working arrangements, including working from home, are always subject to business need. We encourage you to review the specific flexible working options listed in each job description. You can find out more about possible flexible working options in the table below.
FlexitimeA system that allows employees to vary their start and end times, in accordance with business area policy, as long as they complete a set number of hours per week. | Part-time workingA work arrangement where employees work fewer hours than a full-time schedule, often spread across fewer days. | Compressed hoursWorking the same number of hours in fewer days, such as a 4-day working week with longer daily hours. |
Remote workingAn arrangement where employees perform their duties outside the main office, but excluding home working. | Home workingAn arrangement that allows employees to work from home. | Hybrid workingA blend of office-based and home-working, where employees spend part of their time working from the office and part from home, as set out by GCHQ in accordance with business need. |

As well as the New Entrant Orientation programme when you first join, you will have a catalogue of learning and development opportunities available to you via our in-house training academy. No matter your level of experience, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to learn new skills and develop your talent. You might go on dedicated courses, shadow other teams or work towards a recognised qualification. It’s how we keep up with evolving threats, emerging tech and best practice.
From day one, you’ll have amazing support and training. In fact, when you join, you’ll be assigned a ‘buddy’ to help you get to grips with everything. You might also have a mentor who will help to drive your personal and professional development. Plus, we’ll encourage you to use your volunteering leave and help other people. We’re all focused on helping our communities, so we’re always looking for bigger and better ways to support others. With the freedom to shape your own development you, and those around you, will thrive.
Giving Back
As a major employer, we encourage our workforce to use their skills and time to give something back to the communities where they live and work.
Working at GCHQ gives us the opportunity to give back to our local communities up and down the country.
Our people channel our core value of teamwork, and are enthusiastic volunteers and fundraisers. Through events such as cake sales and tuckshops, sponsoring a guide dog, or creating a giant poppy in the courtyard of our iconic Doughnut offices, we have raised in excess of £1,400,000 for over 100 different charities.
People at GCHQ support a wide range of local, national and international charities.
The Royal British Legion (RBL) is one of the key organisations we raise money for. GCHQ was originally formed to support the military, so our support for RBL resonates with our mission to this day. Whilst our fundraising for the RBL continues throughout the year we have been privileged to be involved in two county launches for RBL's annual fundraising campaigns.
Another charity which resonates with us is Heads Together which provides help to people with mental health challenges. We have a proud history of supporting individuals who think differently and solving seemingly impossible problems has underpinned our work over the past century. To date over £500,000 has been raised through the sale of the trio of GCHQ Puzzle Books compiled by our expert puzzle team, with all proceeds going to Heads Together and The Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
We support charities in other ways too. Through our regular ‘Give Back’ events, our people have mentored 50 local charities, providing advice on topics such as social media, fundraising, website design, cyber security and much more. We also support local charity projects such as Hamper Scamper in Gloucestershire which is run by CCP (Caring for Communities and People) to provide food and gifts for vulnerable people at Christmas, as well as the James Hopkins Trust Easter Egg Appeal.
Volunteering is a great way for people to gain new skills. We actively encourage our staff to use their six days of volunteering leave per year to undertake a variety of voluntary activities in the community, from helping in local schools to transforming gardens at hospices.
We also run community days to give staff the chance to promote charities and volunteering opportunities amongst their colleagues. On these days our buildings are abuzz with a variety of stands, from sponsoring Guide Dog puppies and St John's Ambulance demos, to Police Special Constables and Blood Bikes.
