Before you apply
Please check our eligibility requirements before applying for a job. We also have some security guidance to consider regarding email addresses, discretion and overseas travel.
Am I eligible?
To work for GCHQ you must be:
- over 18 years of age
- a British citizen
- a resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years
Expand the menu below to find out more about our eligibility requirements.
You can apply from the age of 17 years. If successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday.
You must be a British citizen to be eligible to apply. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. If successful, you will not normally be required to give up your non-British citizenship but, as a condition of your employment or secondment, GCHQ may impose restrictions on your postings, work travel and/or general use of that nationality.
You’ll usually need to have been a resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years before applying for a role with GCHQ. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. But we do assess each case individually. There are some common exceptions, like studying abroad, living overseas with parents, or serving with HM Forces. We’ll just need references for the time you lived abroad.
Security best practice
It’s really important that you’re discreet about your application. You should not post about your application on social media and you should strictly limit who you tell. You should also not reference any past UKIC employment or any family or other connections you may have in our agencies on your application.
Before you apply, we advise you to consider setting up a separate email address for your contact with us, to ensure your personal and application correspondence remain separate. Try to avoid having identifying features in your email address, such as your first and/or surname and date of birth. This is good practice and will help you securely manage your application with us.
You should also only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas and wish to apply, please contact our recruitment team.
Overseas travel advice
If you are considering applying to GCHQ, please be aware we would strongly advise that you do not book new travel to Russia, Belarus, China (including Hong Kong), North Korea or Iran, or use any airline owned by these countries. We would also advise that you do not transit through these countries. Travel to or through these countries can impact vetting outcomes. If travel is already booked, please contact the recruitment team.
Working for us means that there will be countries that you should not travel to for the duration of your employment. Advice not to travel to these countries may extend beyond employment. You will receive more information on this if you receive a Conditional Offer of Employment.
