The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is the UK's professional and learned body for mathematicians in industry, government and academia, and GCHQ, as a major employer of mathematicians, is a Corporate Affiliate.

The IMA Employers' Forum is a regular meeting for companies and organisations employing mathematicians to discuss matters of common interest, exchange ideas and develop good practice. The topic of this meeting was 'Career Pathways'. There were presentations by major employers with follow-up workshop sessions on 'Recruitment and Generation Y', and 'Reward and Recognition'. Previous meetings have looked at employability and skills, and interactions between business and academia.

About 35 representatives of companies, universities and government departments took part. A number of recommendations, for employers and for the IMA, on ways to improve career development emerged from the meeting.

A full report on the Forum will be published in the IMA newsletter, Mathematics Today.
