With Her Majesty the Queen holding a street party on The Mall to celebrate her 90th Birthday, staff at GCHQ followed suit to mark the occasion.

Inspired by the Patrons Lunch that is taking place on Sunday 12 June on The Mall with the theme of Charity, Community and Celebration, we held our own street party today.

Fortunately our street runs around the inside of our building, under glass, so even the great British weather couldn’t spoil it.  Staff gathered during their lunch hour amongst the bunting and Union flags.

No party is complete without cake and we had plenty of that thanks to staff who took part in a charity Great GCHQ Bake Off challenge. They competed against one another to be the crowned the Crème de la Crème baker.  After the judging, all of the cakes were sold off, raising £1105 for the Patron’s Fund which supports charitable organisations to which Her Majesty The Queen acts as a patron, and COCO which supports children in Africa.

Her Majesty the Queen has lived through some interesting times over the past 90 years.  Since ascending to the throne in 1952 she has been receiving signals intelligence from GCHQ.  In fact, the Queen is the longest standing recipient of our intelligence reports that help keep Britain safe.

We would all like to wish Her Majesty a Happy 90th Birthday.
