Reducing our environmental impact

Last Updated: 17 Mar 2016
We encourage our staff to use public transport, walk or cycle to work if they can.

GCHQ work with Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council to improve bus services and cycle / pedestrian routes around the town.

When we moved into our headquarters, known as the Doughnut, in 2004 the Government gave us and the local authorities some money to reduce the effect of our traffic in the area around the building.

The money has been spent on bus shelters, better foot and cycle paths, and extending existing bus routes for local residents as well as GCHQ staff. We have also helped car drivers by paying for 'queue detectors' on the traffic lights at a nearby roundabout. The detector can tell which queue is longest, and allow that queue more 'green-light' time.

We are proud to work with the local authorities to bring benefits to the community. We are keen to carry on supporting the town's green transport plans in future.
