GCHQ in the community

Last Updated: 21 Oct 2013
GCHQ staff are enthusiastic volunteers and in the past three years have raised over £300,000 for good causes, local and national charities.

We also work with other civil servants in South West England on volunteering initiatives, such as our annual support to the homeless at Christmas through donations of clothing and toiletries.

Team volunteering activities

This year GCHQ teams have been out in the local community supporting a number of voluntary organisations and projects.

One project helped five young adults with learning difficulties living independently with the support of the Brandon Trust. Their garden was overgrown, and needed a lot of work, so they asked for help to make it easy to care for, colourful and a 'super cool' place to hang out.

One GCHQ team stepped in to help:

'We raised nearly £1,300 through cake sales and a sponsored parachute jump. The residents raised some money themselves, and were engaged in every part of the project and their enthusiasm was evident throughout the day.

'I thoroughly enjoyed being involved, it wasn't always easy to motivate people but it's probably one of the highlights of my career and I learnt a number of new skills, such as project management.'

GCHQ Team Leader

'Your commitment and enthusiasm to this project has been incredible, the transformation you made fabulous, the interaction I saw between your guys and the people we support was a joy to see.'
