GCHQ is looking to recruit a number of people to
work in a technological environment in direct support of our core
business - intelligence production.
People will be involved in keeping the IT systems operational,
providing desktop IT support to users, database management, systems
administration and in UNIX and Windows systems support.
One of the greatest attractions of working at GCHQ is that you
are likely to become involved in a range of work that is unequalled
for its diversity. You will, therefore, have the opportunity to
gain invaluable experience across a range of applied technologies
in the rapidly changing and advancing fields of IT and communications
science.
Most of those engaged in support to operations work in an IT support
role and will concentrate on keeping our complex IT systems operational
in line with the latest IT Service Management 'best practice'. Incidents
and problems must be managed and resolved effectively, and the lessons
learned. Database Management is also a large part of this support
function and there is the opportunity to specialise in the administration
of leading edge Database Management systems. A number of people
will have customer facing roles where they will gain an in-depth
understanding of GCHQ's core business and an overview of GCHQ's
end-to-end processing.
Some examples of the kind of work you might get involved in are:
- Providing first-line or second-line support for a variety of
modern systems using commercial software packages, relational
databases and bespoke software running on both UNIX and WINDOWS
operating systems.
- Advising customers and system/application developers on the
introduction of new IT facilities into the workplace and subsequently
assisting customers in making best use of those facilities.
- Managing helpdesk calls from on-site and off-site users, co-ordinating
problem management and triggering problem escalation when necessary.
Here you will gain a wide understanding of the many specialist
IT services and their importance to GCHQ and other users.
- Managing the numerous changes and additions being made to the
IT complex, liaising with customers and other technical support
staff to evaluate the impact of the change and producing contingency
solutions in event of problems occurring when the change is implemented.
- Investigating and recommending enhancements/amendments to accepted
applications and/or working practices, to improve GCHQ core business.
- The management of teams involved in the regular checking on
the health of numerous computer and communications networks that
together make the largest computer complex outside of the USA.
- Investigating and resolving system problems relating to major
IT system or network failures.
- The management of teams of people who provide IT support to
UNIX and Windows desktop users.
- Managing systems providing electronic distribution via X.400/X.500
of critical data and messages ensuring timely delivery and receipt
by customers.
- Building, configuring and testing new systems with operating
system and application software as part of major new project activity.
