Linguists play a vital role in the work of GCHQ by
providing foreign language support on a wide range of intelligence
targets.
The role of a Linguist can vary, depending on the area you work
in. Some Linguists spend the majority of their time working on large
amounts of textual or audio material. They provide analysts with
gists or full translations of interesting items which are then turned
into an intelligence report to be sent to customers in other government
departments and agencies.
All Linguists work on foreign language material, but some also
produce the intelligence reports themselves, which go directly to
customers in other government departments. Linguists may also get
involved in technical intercept issues, and in liaison with their
counterparts and customers elsewhere in government.
All Linguists, whatever their individual job description, have
to maintain a knowledge of current affairs surrounding their intelligence
target(s), build up vocabulary and language skills relevant to their
work, and also keep updated on their customers' requirements. This
enables them to sift through and properly analyse large amounts
of foreign language material and judge whether it is of any intelligence
value.
Most Linguists work in a small group within a larger team made
up of intelligence & operational analysts, business managers,
admin support staff and others. Each team covers one or more intelligence
topic.
IT is crucial to Linguist work. We have a number of in-house software
programmes which Linguists use on a daily basis to get their work
done. Full training is provided on specific applications.
This is an office job, based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Opportunities
for travel are extremely rare. Most of the work is carried out at
computer workstations, with access to computer-based working aids
and a wide range of reference material.
