: about you

We require a variety of aptitudes, skills and knowledge, which in turn requires a wide variety of people.

You will have highly developed communication and team skills to operate effectively at all levels, internally and with external contacts. We look for people with exceptional talent across a number of areas - people with an insight into current affairs who can:

  • solve puzzles
  • rapidly assimilate and refine information
  • make logical deductions in either an intelligence or policy context
  • display real drive and determination
  • combine one or more of these qualities with exceptional management ability

You should have, or expect to obtain in the current academic year, a 1st or 2nd class honours degree in any discipline, or a postgraduate degree.

As a manager you will need to demonstrate sound organisational skills when it comes to controlling a number of different resources, not to mention the ability to value people from a number of disciplines, other Government Departments, and even other nations. All managers within GCHQ are expected to take an informed and caring approach to developing the capabilities and potential of every member of staff. Tailored training, advice and development will be given to you to help you develop the relevant skills.

Technical qualifications and expertise are not priorities when it comes to assessing candidates. However as most of our work involves using advanced computer programmes, we do look for a general ability to appreciate and adapt to an ever-changing technical environment.
