Good reasons to join us
- You won't be able to tell your family and friends what you do
so they'll think it's glamorous and exciting
- Some of it may actually be glamorous and exciting, and you will
be making a valuable contribution to our nation's security
- You will definitely gain a unique perspective on international
affairs
- And as a member of the UK intelligence community you will have
a privileged insight into what is, by necessity, a closed world
to the vast majority of people
- It's a prestigious, challenging job, and offers lots of variety
within the one organisation. GCHQ is more selective than the General
Fast Stream and will look good on your CV
- There are lots of country pubs in the Cotswolds
- You'll get to meet friendly, like-minded people (i.e. us!)
- You'll be working in our state-of-the-art new accommodation
(aka The Doughnut)
- If you like literature, music, racing, parks, flowers, Regency
architecture, wine bars and restaurants, Cheltenham has plenty
to offer, and the Cotswolds are right on the doorstep
- You get excellent training at the Civil Service College at Sunningdale,
which offers golf, swimming, tennis, squash, a gym and two bars.
There are also excellent sports clubs in Cheltenham
- Foreign travel: Most Fast Streamers get to go on trips abroad,
and sometimes to quite unusual places
- Location: Cheltenham is at most a couple of hours from the South
coast, Wales, Oxford and London
and a couple of reasons to stay away
- If you're drawn to the bright lights of a big city, Cheltenham
is not the place for you. Although this does mean you avoid the
nightmare that is commuting
- If you're a technophobe, you won't like it here. Not that as
a Fast Streamer you will be deeply involved in technical issues,
but technology is our business and you should be comfortable with
it
- Although we work closely with our London customers, Cheltenham
is a long way from Whitehall, so if you like the cut and thrust
of parliamentary politics you won't find it here
- Your salary will not compare to the leading earners in the private
sector (but the other benefits more than compensate for that)
- If you want to be a stereotypical civil servant in the Yes Minister
mould, don't even think of coming here (and you probably won't
get through the selection process!)
