GCHQ has launched its new nationwide recruitment
campaign with an eye-catching newspaper that provides the reader
with an intriguing glimpse into one of the world's most successful
intelligence agencies.
Instead of issuing the usual glossy brochure that typifies most
national recruitment drives, GCHQ has developed the Daily Observer,
a tabloid style newspaper which is chock full of news and information
about one of the world's major intelligence agencies. The format
is simple but effective, providing the reader with a blend of articles
designed to entertain as well as inform. Features cater for all
tastes: newsy items about the value of GCHQ's intelligence and the
role of its analysts, linguists technologists and mathematicians
sit alongside light hearted sports, horoscope, and entertainment
sections. The newspaper also contains fascinating facts about GCHQ's
new state-of-the-art headquarters.
According to a GCHQ spokesman: "Even though we cannot shout out
loud about our specific intelligence successes, our work has a significant
effect on issues that often make the news headlines. By developing
our own newspaper we have the perfect vehicle to shed more light
on the less sensitive aspects of our role."
He continued: "The beauty of this newspaper format is that it is
not static - we intend to update the Daily Observer on a regular
basis to highlight the vital work we do to protect British interests
worldwide."
GCHQ's recruitment team made the news themselves in the summer
when they won the 'best integrated recruitment campaign' award at
the annual Association of Graduate Recruiters conference. This was
hard on the heels of being rated once again as one of the Sunday
Times Top 100 Employers.
