The Universities Day held by GCHQ's language department
On Friday 6 October was a huge success, judging by the enthusiastic
feedback received from the attendees who represented university
language and careers departments across the UK.
It was a rare opportunity for networking both between GCHQ and the attendees
and indeed amongst themselves. They were greatly impressed by both
the expertise of GCHQ linguists and the quality of the presentations.
One attendee commented that it was the best set of presentations by a
prospective employer that he had ever attended.
It was felt that with its wealth of expertise in the field of language,
GCHQ had a vital role to play in the academic world.
Anglia Ruskin University's Head of Languages commented: "It
was very informative, heartening and a useful day for university
language academics and careers personnel.
"What we saw demonstrated potential to motivate young British
people into appreciating that the study of a foreign language can
lead to a very fulfilling career, with the opportunity to become
involved in key issues shaping the modern world."
Meanwhile, the representative from Aston University's School of
Languages commented: "It gave me lots of ideas for our work
with schools, as well as a new perspective on careers for linguist
graduates.
"We look forward to continuing contacts as GCHQ offers linguists
an opportunity, one that for once merits the description "unique",
of continuing to use their language skills in a challenging job.
This was a new initiative in GCHQ's educational outreach programme
and in view of its success, similar events are planned for the future.
