MPs get a taste of GCHQ'S doughnut

Recently appointed members of the Intelligence and Security Committee made their first visit to GCHQ today to gain an insight into the vital work it does to protect the UK's security.

The Committee, comprising members of both houses of parliament, visited GCHQ on 9 February to meet with Director, Sir David Pepper and other members of GCHQ's staff. The MPs received briefings on how the intelligence centre helps to counter threats to the UK posed by terrorists, develops and promotes information assurance measures to protect the UK's IT infrastructure, and provides support to the UK's armed forces.

Chair of the committee, Rt. Hon Paul Murphy, commented: "The work of GCHQ is extremely important. This visit has been really useful and illuminating, there is no substitute for coming to Cheltenham and seeing the work first hand."

The ISC was formed in 1994 to oversee the expenditure, administration and policy of GCHQ, Security Service and Secret Intelligence Service. Paul Murphy, was appointed as the new chair in July 2005 and other committee members are Rt Hon Alan Beith, Rt Hon Michael Mates, Rt Hon George Howarth, Rt Hon Michael Ancram, Baroness Meta Ramsay of Cartvale, Dari Taylor, Ben Chapman and Richard Ottaway.
