GCHQ welcomes the Prime Ministers announcement that GCHQ will host a new multi-agency Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC). CSOC will
stand up in September 2009.
A spokesperson said Im pleased that the new Cyber Security Operations Centre is to be co-located with GCHQs Cheltenham Headquarters.
Its important to bring together in one place the knowledge which different parts of government and industry have about threats to the security
and resilience of UK networks. And GCHQs best technical experts will be on hand to offer advice and support to the unit as it establishes
itself.
The new National Cyber Security Strategy makes clear how important good network defence is to securing the UKs prosperity and allowing people
and businesses to live and work online with confidence. The technical edge that the UK gets from some of GCHQs experts in this area is a real
national asset.
GCHQ is not recruiting specifically for the new centre, but always welcomes interest from potential employees with a keen interest in the internet
and its underlying technology - whether IT graduates or self-taught. It is essential in order to work at GCHQ to pass stringent vetting requirements
which include security and background checks.
GCHQ expects Cyber Security to be an increasing part of its mission in future, but its not something that can be solely delivered by GCHQs
experts, or the new CSOC. It needs partnership working with other departments and industry, and crucially it needs individual users to understand
the good practices which will keep their internet activities safer see Get Safe Online. Thats why the
Government has been prepared to say more publicly about the threat we face than has previously been the case.
