A GCHQ team has triumphed in this year's Microsoft
UK Challenge, a charity endurance event seeing off competition from
123 businesses from across the UK.
A seven-person GCHQ team - '007' - has won this year's Microsoft
UK Challenge, an annual four-day event billed as 'the UK's greatest
team building adventure'. The challenge tests physical and mental
stamina to the ultimate, while raising lots of money for charity.
Competing against 119 teams drawn from a wide range of top UK businesses
and public sector organisations, 007 members proved that they were
ahead of the field in day and night-time pursuits ranging from mountain
biking and kayaking in rugged countryside around Aberystwyth through
to logic puzzles and code cracking. GCHQ has been entering teams
for ten years and has previously won the public sector crown but
this is the first time that they have been overall champions.
Team member Charlie said: "This has been the experience of a lifetime
and the team skills we've developed will enhance the work we do
at GCHQ, protecting the nation's security. We're all absolutely
thrilled about winning." The icing on the cake is that 007 and two
other GCHQ teams taking part in the event raised almost £6000
for the NSPCC.
A spokesman for the competition, Andrew Finan, said: "GCHQ were
outstanding in all areas and deserved to win."
The next step for 007 is a trip to Florida in December to compete
in the Microsoft World Challenge.
