GCHQ Challenge (Cheltenham Science Festival) - background

Background to Operation Safecode

A gang directed by arch criminal Martin Nichols carried out an audacious robbery stealing a number of ancient and very valuable documents.

We tracked the gang to a flat in Borchester and captured all but Nichols and his faithful lieutenant Julian Stephens. In the room was a strange safe with a 9-letter combination lock. The captured gang members tell us that the loot is stored in the safe and that the combination is a 9-letter word. They say that no-one but Nichols knows the combination. Unfortunately they also tell us that he has rigged the safe to explode, destroying the delicate contents, if the wrong keyword is entered or the safe is otherwise interfered with.
We've tracked Nichols down to a terraced house in Felpersham and are monitoring his behaviour. We suspect he knows he is under observation – not least from his strange behaviour – and expect him to try to get the secret password to Stephens in some way.
Your help in working out what is going on will be invaluable.
